Newmarket restaurant cooks up game fortnight

14 November 2013

Since the UK is in the middle of game season Squires' (the restaurant at Bedford Lodge Hotel) executive chef, James Fairchild, decided it was perfect timing to put game on the menu at Newmarket’s only four-star hotel from 18 to 30 November.

Award-winning Squires restaurant at Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa is staging “Game Fortnight”.

Since the UK is in the middle of game season the restaurant’s executive chef, James Fairchild, decided it was perfect timing to put game on the menu at Newmarket’s only four-star hotel from 18 to 30 November.

Game meat has become much more popular these days thanks to celebrity chefs and the trend to source locally produced foods, which cuts down on transport costs and aids local economies.

James said: “Game is wild, natural and free range and with a distinctive flavour loved by many people. It is also an economical alternative for many households at this time of year.

“I think there is nothing better on a chilly November day and you can be sure that it has created a lower carbon footprint as it does not travel far from farmland to the shop.”

This type of meat has been around for hundreds of years but our ancestors didn’t have the luxury of dipping into the nearest supermarket for a piece of partridge.

On the Squires menu during the fortnight you can spot roasted venison loin in dark chocolate sauce, pressed terrine of Suffolk game and wild-game sausages, or try a bit of wood pigeon or roast partridge.

Bedford Lodge Hotel... sweat bands and lycra at the ready!

The 4 star Bedford Lodge Hotel in Newmarket is supporting St Nicholas Hospice Care by taking part in the 2012 Accumulator Challenge.

The Challenge which kicked off on the 19th June, tasks each participating company with accumulating as much money as possible by whatever means possible... as long as it’s fair and legal!  Last year’s total reached a staggering £40,000 pounds!

In addition to giving their guests the option of adding £1 to their bill for the duration of the challenge, Bedford Lodge Hotel will be staging a Charity Bike Ride pulling together the support of their employees, guests, leisure members, business associates and the general public.   The virtual bike ride will be taking place on the front lawn of the hotel and will involve 2 bikes and just 12 hours to cycle from Newmarket Clock Tower to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, as the crow flies - tallying up a total of 251 miles!  The whistle is set to blow at 7am on Thursday, 13th September and will end at 7pm with a celebratory BBQ.

Bedford Lodge Hotel Chief Executive, Noel Byrne said:  “This is the second time we have lent our support to this amazing charity and we are honoured and thrilled to be taking part.  We are really excited about this particular challenge as it involves such a broad spectrum of like-minded people as not only are we inviting our guests, leisure members and employees to take to the saddle but we are also appealing to our local residents for their support.”

Bedford Lodge Hotel set to release 22 new super-king sized bedrooms...

Scheduled for release early August 2012, the new bedrooms will be bigger and will benefit from the added luxury of a separate bath and shower.

The creation of these super-king sized bedrooms forms part of the hotel’s continuing expansion and renovation programme.  To date, 49 of the existing bedrooms have been completely refurbished with an increased standard of luxury.  The bar and restaurant have also been completely revamped.  Squires Restaurant, formerly The Orangery, provides a much more relaxed dining experience and has been enjoying a marked increase in bookings since its launch in February.

Noel Byrne, Chief Executive said: “It’s been a very busy time of late with everything that has been unfolding at the hotel and we are most grateful to our guests for their continued support and patience during this time of transition.”

He added: “Bedford Lodge Hotel can only capitalise from the addition of these new bedrooms and will allow us to accommodate additional guests when our new stand-alone spa opens its doors in March 2013.”

The much anticipated Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel is being sympathetically created in the 19th Century Rockfield House, adjacent to the hotel.  This destination spa will provide visitors with a truly unique experience, unlike anything else in the area.

NDCC Customer Focus Award

01 June 2012

Hotel crowned the best in Newmarket for customer service...

Staff at Bedford Lodge Hotel in Newmarket are celebrating after their hard work was repaid with a customer service award, beating off stiff competition from businesses across the town.

The four star Bury Road hotel scooped the Customer Focus prize at theNewmarket and District Chamber of Commerce Business Awards at a ceremony at the town’s Jockey Rooms.

Judges were impressed by the venue’s commitment to ensuring its clientele are given consistently high quality service, borne out of regular training sessions and strict operating procedures.

Bedford Lodge Chief Executive Noel Byrne said: “I am so proud of my team for winning this award.  It is testament to their unwavering dedication to our guests, from whom we regularly receive glowing feedback.

“We’re all thrilled to have been recognised by the Chamber of Commerce in this way and will ensure that we continue to maintain our high standards of customer care.”

Mr Byrne added that Bedford Lodge’s low staff turnover helps the hotel to offer excellent customer service across all areas – including its wedding and conference offerings, Squire’s restaurant and The Edge Health and Fitness Club.

“We care about our staff, which means they are much more likely to remain with us for the long term – in fact, many of our team members have been with us for ten years or more,” he said.  “This means that our service is consistent and that our regular guests can always be assured of a familiar face.

“As a result of our staff’s hard work, we have bucked the trend and increased our turnover over the past year.”

Bedford Lodge is currently undergoing a £5 million expansion programme to include the creation of 22 new bedrooms, with at least 25 further jobs to be introduced at the hotel as a result.  A spa is also being built in the grounds of the hotel, which is due to open early next year.

New Spa for Bedford Lodge Hotel

01 December 2011
New Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel!

Newmarket’s economy will be given a huge boost in 2012 with the opening of a new spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel, with more than 40 jobs set to be created.

Neighbouring Rockfield House, which was purchased by Bedford Lodge owners Review Hotels Ltd last year, has been granted change of use planning permission to become The Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel.  Scheduled to open next summer, the development will lead to around 40 jobs when completed and scores of further employment opportunities throughout the building stages.

Bedford Lodge Chief Executive Noel Byrne explained that the announcement was great news for both the hotel andNewmarket.  He added: “We are passionate about providing opportunities to local people so we’re extremely pleased that our new spa will give such a boost to the town.  2012 is going to be a very exciting year for Bedford Lodge.”

The four-star hotel in Bury Road is currently undergoing a separate £1.5 million expansion programme to include the creation of 21 new bedrooms, with at least 25 new jobs to be introduced at the hotel as a result.

The hotel also benefited from a £60,000 investment in new digital television equipment in May, while in recent years its reception area has been transformed and its health and fitness club refurbished.  Its seven meeting and banqueting rooms have also been modernised with state of the art audio-visual systems.

£500,000 has already been invested in the transformation of the 19th century Rockfield House which was once part of the estate of the sixth Duke of Bedford.  Set in approximately an acre of grounds, the property was most recently owned by Forest Heath District Council.  It has been empty for some time.

Mr Byrne added: “Rockfield House is a truly beautiful building which has retained many of its original features such as its high ceilings and grand staircase.  These will all be restored to their former glory as the spa is created.

“The Spa at Bedford Lodge will be open to the public by appointment for a range of treatments including manicures, pedicures, full body massages, facials and many more, as well as day spa and residential spa breaks.  It is likely to become a real asset to Newmarket and the surrounding area which doesn’t currently have anything else of its kind.”

Bedford Lodge Hotel could be crowned 'Best Large Hotel' in Suffolk...

Excellent customer service, outstanding facilities and high levels of repeat business have all helped Bedford Lodge Hotel in Newmarket secure a place in the finals of this year’s Suffolk Tourism Awards.

The four-star hotel in Bury Road has been shortlisted in the Best Large Hotel category, with the winners due to be announced at a black tie ceremony in Trinity Park in Ipswichnext Thursday.

General Manager Noel Byrne said the news had come at an exciting time for the hotel.  Bought by Review Hotels last year, Bedford Lodge has just announced a £1.5 million expansion programme which includes the construction of 21 new bedrooms.  This will lead to at least 25 new jobs for the Newmarket area.

He said: “We are extremely pleased that we have been recognised by the judging panel of the Suffolk Tourism Awards.  Bedford Lodge was crowned the county’s Hotel of the Year in 2007 and we hope to emulate that success this year.”

Judges of the awards were impressed with Bedford Lodge’s success as a leisure venue, with 81 per cent of its 55 luxury rooms filled over the last year, more than half of which was repeat business.

Mr Byrne added: “We are also very popular for our wedding and conference facilities, plus our health club The Edge.  Our two AA Rosette restaurant The Orangery is also a big draw for us, with our chef James Fairchild committed to ensuring he uses as much local produce as possible.”

Bedford Lodge Hotel is a former hunting lodge which was built for the Duke of Bedford in the 18th century.  A hotel since the 1940s, the Georgian building is Newmarket’s only four star hotel and is nestled in three acres of secluded rose gardens.

Dunwoody Completes Historic Walk

10 July 2009
Richard Dunwoody finished his historic 1000 mile walk infront of packed stands at Newmarket's July Course today. Accompanied by racing legend Lester Piggott.

Dunwoody who began his attempt to equal the feat of Captain Robert Barclay in 1809 on May 29, walked the final mile of the challenge through the stands and up the finishing straight.

The fund raising event which involved Dunwoody walking a measured mile between the Bedford Lodge Hotel and Newmarket's war memorial every hour for 1000 hours, looks to have raised around £100,000 for a number of charities including Racing Welfare and the Alzheimer's Society.

Strictly Top Scores!

17 April 2009
It was strictly ballroom at the Bedford Lodge Hotel in Newmarket when dance stars Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace from the hit TV show Strictly Come Dancing came to town.

They donned their dance shoes and foxtrotted across the floor as they gave a masterclass to a select group of 20 people before hosting an evening cabaret dance for 100.

The tuition afternoon scored a resounding 10 after 90 minutes of cha cha cha, foxtrot and quickstep, with the professional dancing duo putting the group through their paces, leaving them elated and breathless.

Steve and Caroline Shore from Moulton End near Newmarket were among those to enjoy the fun, taking to the ballroom floor for the first time ever.

Caroline, who got to dance with Vincent, said: “They are really good teachers and made it easy to follow. It was exhilarating, uplifting, frustrating and exhausting – while fantastic at the same time.” For Steve, it was great fun and made him want to improve his technique on the dance floor.

Vincent and Flavia heralded the masterclass a great success, with Vincent commenting: "It went really well. Most of the people were beginners and in just over an hour had learned three different dances. Even though some said they had left feet, they were all up and dancing!"

Flavia added: "It was a beautiful venue and a beautiful day with lovely weather. Everyone had a great time, they were a great bunch of people, very friendly and lovely, the time just flew by!"

Also spinning around the room were Colin and Elaine Archer from Ipswich, who were enjoying the day at the luxury four-star hotel as a birthday treat. Elaine had the pleasure of dancing with Vincent and said: "We learned lots of small tips which made all the difference to our dancing."

The pair have been to a few dance classes before but as Colin noted: "The great thing about learning these good basic dance steps is that you can get up and dance anywhere. It was really good fun."

One person who couldn’t join in was Robyn Palmer from Norwich who had broken his leg skiing and had to watch instead. His partner Suzy Wright did get to dance. She said: “It was really good fun. They picked some good dances "and Robyn got his plaster cast  signed by Vincent and Flavia!"

Bedford Lodge Managing Director Noel Byrne said: “It was great for those attending the masterclass as they were able to show off their new-found skills during the evening. Our banqueting suite at the Bedford Lodge was the perfect location and we’re looking forward to welcoming Vincent and Flavia to our sister hotel Barnham Broom next month for a repeat performance."
