Matt Thomson

A native of New Zealand, Matt is now a well-known oenologist and a key figure in the international wine industry. With the goal of becoming a winemaker, Matt completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Biochemistry (1989) as well as a Master of Science degree in Biochemistry (1992), both at the University of Otago.

Since the completion of his degrees in 1992, he has worked in New Zealand as a winemaker for several premium wineries in Marlborough, including Delta Wine Company, Saint Clair Estate, Mudhouse Wines, Le Grys Estate, Lake Chalice Wines and Cape Campbell.  At the same time, he has spent every vintage since 1993 in Europe, including vintages in Bordeaux (1993), Friuli/Veneto (Lorenzon, Terre in Fiore and Alpha Zeta, since1999) and Piemonte (1994-1999, 2001-2009).

His knowledge of Italian winemaking is such that he has been a consultant winemaker for several international distributors, primarily in the U.K, often travelling to Italy 3-4 times per year and spending each harvest in Italy, primarily in the north.  He still enjoys the challenge of working two harvests a year rewarding and useful in terms of the viticultural crossover.

Matt makes the wines of Delta Vineyard and Tinpot Hut in Marlborough; Alpha Zeta in Verona, Ponte del Diavolo in Grave del Friuli and consults to numerous others.

In September 2008, Matt was named White Wine Maker of the Year at the International Wine Challenge.
