10 November 2014

One of the best commendations has been bestowed on our Hotel & Spa following a public vote at the Velvet Magazine Awards we won a ‘First for Hotels’, for the 3rd year running, ‘First for Diet and Fitness’ for the 2nd year running and a ‘First for Beauty’ for The Spa.

One of the best commendations has just been bestowed on our Hotel & Spa – a public vote that won us a clutch of local magazine accolades.

At the annual Velvet Magazine Awards held at The Granary Barns in Woodditton we won a ‘First for Hotels’, for the third year running, ‘First for Diet and Fitness’ for the second year running and a ‘First for Beauty’ for The Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel.

It is the result of voting from thousands of readers of the magazine who visited their website www.velvetmag.co.uk to pick their favourite venues and health and fitness facilities across Cambridge, Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket, Saffron Walden and Ely.

Alan Stanford, the new Health and Fitness Club Manager at Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa, said: “This is an excellent result for us and great news for members and others looking to source a top-class health and fitness centre. We are currently completing a major and exciting refurbishment with an investment of over £300,000.”

It is the first time the Spa, which is just a year old, has picked up the beauty award. Its new manager, Leanna Kew, said: “This really is great news and even better that we have been picked by the public, that means so much.”

Chief Executive Noel Byrne, paid tribute to his staff: “It really is down to their hard work and commitment to the job that we are earning these kinds of accolades. But I also want to say thank you to all the people who voted for us, too. It’s great to know their efforts are appreciated.”

Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa is the only four-star hotel in Newmarket and one of only 67 in the country that has four AA Red Stars. It has 77 stylish guest rooms, is set in three acres of secluded rose gardens and has a £5.5 million destination spa.

Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa celebrates after upgrading from 4 AA Black Stars to 4 AA Red Stars

23 September 2014

One of the highest accolades in the hospitality industry has been bestowed on the Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa. The AA has upgraded the hotel  from 4 Black Stars to 4 Red Stars in recognition of its excellent quality service and standards across all areas of the business.

One of the highest accolades in the hospitality industry has been bestowed on the Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa in Newmarket, Suffolk.

The AA has upgraded the hotel  from 4 Black Stars to 4 Red Stars in recognition of its excellent quality service and standards across all areas of the business.

It is one of only a handful of hotels in East Anglia to have been given 4 Red Stars and there are a total of only 67 hotels in the whole of the UK to be awarded the exclusive accolade.

The prestigious award was presented to Noel Byrne, chief executive of the hotel and spa, at a ceremony in London on 22nd September.

Mr Byrne said: “This is an amazing achievement for our team who are focused on delivering exceptional customer service to all our guests. The 4 AA Red Stars is something that everyone at Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa has been working towards and it is a privilege to accept this award on their behalf.”

The AA’s Head of Hotel Services Manager, Simon Numphud, who manages the hotel inspection process, said:  “Red stars, as opposed to black stars, indicate hotels which represent the most outstanding examples in each star category.

“The criteria for AA Red Stars are consistent excellence in all areas of a hotel’s operation, and Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa joins an elite group of top performers within the hotel industry. It is encouraging to see there are still hotels pushing the boundaries and striving for high standards and excellent quality.”

To celebrate, the hotel has released 100 biodegradable balloons with prizes attached to each of them to whoever finds them. Prizes include overnight stays, Champagne spa days for two, spa treatments and ten Sunday lunches.

Melissa Pantano-Gaus, marketing co-ordinator at Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa, said: “We wanted to do something to celebrate this fantastic award with our neighbours. Hopefully 100 of them will find the balloons and will come to visit to enjoy the prizes. In some releases balloons have been known to travel over 1000 miles, so perhaps it may mean we get to celebrate with some more international guests as well.”

Rachel Hood, the Mayor of Newmarket, said: "This is an outstanding achievement by Bedford Lodge & Spa, as well as for the town of Newmarket. Newmarket is further establishing itself as an elite destination in the East of England for UK and international tourists and we are hugely proud of this wonderful accomplishment."

The 77-bed hotel has benefited from £12 million investment over the past three years including additional bedrooms, refurbished facilities and a new £5 million luxury spa. It also houses a 2AA Rosette Restaurant, Squires.

The independently owned hotel is set in three acres of beautiful rose gardens and has conference and banqueting facilities for up to 180 delegates; it is a much sought after venue for business, leisure and wedding guests, as well as visitors to Newmarket racecourse and Cambridge.

Keith Brown, Chief Executive of Visit East Anglia said: “We are thrilled that the Bedford Lodge has been acknowledged as one the country’s finest four-star hotels. To have a hotel and spa of such quality in Suffolk and East Anglia is great news for our visitors as well as for Newmarket itself.”

The AA has been recommending hotels since 1908, but in 1912 adopted a more critical approach to the hotels listed in its handbook.  The AA’s then Secretary, Stenson Cooke, had once been a wine and spirits salesman and felt that the star rating of brandy would be familiar yardstick to apply to hotels. From then on the AA star rating for hotels was born. Establishments are awarded between one and five stars depending on set criteria following an overnight visit from an AA Hotel Inspector.

Back in 1994, the year when the Channel Tunnel opened and Meatloaf topped the charts with “I’d do anything for love”, Prince Charles and Princess Diana split, the club opened with just 18 members, today it has more than 800.

It was already renowned for some of the finest leisure and fitness facilities in Newmarket, but raised the bar when it had a major £250,000 refit in 2010.

As part of the refurbishment the club was equipped with more state-of-the-art cardio machines – treadmills, exercise bikes and cross trainers – to further enhance its offering to clients.

When clients arrive for a workout they step into an air-conditioned gym and can also take advantage of the 15 metre swimming pool, spa bath, sauna and steam room.

Members today also use the dance studio facilities where they can take part in boxercise, yoga, pilates and studio cycling.

Vanessa Turrell, from The Edge, said: “We’ve come a long way since 1994 and it’s great to see these members are still with us.

“We continue to listen to our customers and as a result they have remained loyal and we intend to keep it that way. In the coming months we will be refurbishing the gym and changing rooms in order to ensure our members have the best facilities.”

Gym Manager is losing the inches and plummeting!

10 June 2014

Paul Simmons, the manager of The Edge Gym and leisure club at Bedford Lodge Hotel has successfully shed two stone in order to take part in an extreme sport for charity but he’s wondering how he ever got himself involved in it!

Paul Simmons has successfully shed two stone in order to take part in an extreme sport for charity but he’s wondering how he ever got himself involved in it.

The 41-year-old manager of The Edge leisure centre at the four-star Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa, is due to take to the skies in order to freefall to the ground for The Prospects Trust.

Paul, from Exning, near Newmarket, said he doesn’t even like heights but was socialising with friends earlier this year and admits that in a weak moment he found himself roped into the parachute jump.

Now he knows there is no going back since he’s already raised almost £500 for the Trust, an organisation that runs Snakehall Farm in Reach, and produces fresh produce with the help of young adults with disabilities. The work helps these adults build their confidence, self-esteem, gain new skills and it aims to provide work experience and work-based training for them, too.

The Trust has been in existence for 25 years and aims to raise £25,000 this year with the aid of the Snakehall Superhero Skydive tandem jump, which Paul is taking part in, and other ventures to help continue their good work.

Paul said: “At the beginning of the year I was already starting to lose weight but got the added incentive when I rashly agreed to do the skydive.

Prospects Trust at Snakehall Farm

“I was a little on the heavy side for their weight restriction so that gave me the boost I needed to shed the inches. Considering I don’t like heights, friends think it is odd for me to want to do it.”

He works in an ideal place to lose the pounds as he was able to take part in the spin classes run in the gym’s dance studios. Now he’s two stone lighter he is to join over 20 others at Beccles airfield in Norfolk on 8 June for the big event.

He said: “I am confident and looking forward to it. It’s not until I talk about it I get nervous. Because I have raised £500 already it makes me that much more committed.”

Hotel's top chef gives tips for bake off challenge

20 May 2014

Aspiring cooks taking part in the Great Mildenhall Bake Off have been given some culinary tips by Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa’s top chef James Fairchild.

Aspiring cooks taking part in the Great Mildenhall Bake Off have been given some culinary tips by Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa’s top chef James Fairchild.

The executive chef at the award-winning Squires restaurant at Newmarket’s only four-star hotel, is one of a panel of three judges at the charity bake off.

It’s an event being staged by the Mildenhall Lions club and takes place on Saturday 7 June at the Jubilee Centre to raise money for Ovacome, the ovarian cancer support network.

And while he’s at pains not to say what his preferences are he was happy to share some trade secrets to aspiring chefs.

Here are James's top Bake-Off tips:

  • If you are making a sponge cake make sure you retain a lot of air in the mixture so don’t beat it too much.
  • With chocolate brownies and flapjacks don’t cook them too long. “The mistake people make is taking them out of the oven at the required time, seeing them a little wobbly and gooey and wrongly deciding that they need more time. If you do that, once they cool down they’ll go hard.
  • “If you decide to cook cupcakes, again make sure you don’t overcook them and you’ll need to know where the hot and cool spots are in your oven. I like to design my cupcakes on paper first so I know exactly what they are going to look like.
  • “If you’ve decided to bake scones, get up early on the day and cook them a few hours before the event so you can bring them in fresh – that is the best way to serve them.
  • “For the under 12 cooks, it is always best to cook something you enjoy and like to eat and don’t do something too complex. I’d rather taste something that looks slightly basic but is nice to eat.”

Kirsti Fox, secretary of the Mildenhall Lions, said: “This is the first time we’ve staged the event so we’ve no idea how many people will attend but it is for the whole community to enter. “We have had a lot of interest and we have a Facebook page now, too, so keep an eye on that.”

The other judges are Scott Taylor from The Courtyard restaurant, Elveden, and Ged Sharrocks of The Riverside House Hotel, Mildenhall.

It is £5 to enter one category but you can enter multiple categories. Check out The Great Mildenhall Bake Off on Facebook for category details or call Kirsti Fox on 07900 498916.

The Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa has 77 stylish guest rooms, is set in three acres of secluded rose gardens and recently opened a new £5.5m Spa. It is just a short distance from Newmarket’s famous paddocks and training stables.

Gardening tips from our award-winning Geoff for National Gardening week

09 April 2014

Service the mower, finish off the last of the pruning and start giving the lawn a bit of tender loving care – says Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa’s professional gardener – for this is National Gardening Week.

Top tips for a beautiful garden from Bedford Lodge Hotel's head gardener

Tips from award-winning Newmarket gardener for National Gardening week (14-20 April)

Service the mower, finish off the last of the pruning and start giving the lawn a bit of tender loving care – says Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa’s professional gardener – for this is National Gardening Week.

Geoff Baker, 68, is an award-winning gardener who has tended the three-acre gardens at Newmarket’s only four-star hotel for 13 years.

He says his favourite season is this time of year, spring, because everything is bursting into life.

“Most gardeners will tell you that because this is the start of the growing season – the beginning of the gardening year.”

He takes particular pride in the striped lawns that greet guests as they drive into the estate, which used to be a hunting lodge built for the Duke of Bedfordshire in the 18th century.

“The lawn is a great first impression and when I receive compliments from guests about it there is nothing like it. I like to think it encourages those people just visiting that this is a really lovely place to stay overnight, too.”

In celebration of the Royal Horticultural Society’s National Gardening week, he has revealed his top lawn tips to Newmarket gardeners for this time of year.

He said: "Having a beautiful lawn really complements any garden and if you pay it a little attention in spring it will reward you for many months to come."

Geoff's Top Gardening Tips

  1. Your lawn should be mowed whenever the grass is growing, so that is generally weekly but can be more in this season when the weather gets warmer.
  2. Keep the grass at the same height, between 1-1.5 inches, although raise the mowing height for lawns that get a lot of wear or are in shade.
  3. Feeding the lawn with fertilizer not only makes it greener but thicker, so make sure you spend some money here.
  4. Aerate the lawn with a garden fork, especially if you have clay soil, to increase drainage and encourage better growth.
  5. If you have a moss problem you’ll need to scarify it by lifting it out from the lawn using a rake, then seed any bare patches.

"Then sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labour," adds Geoff.

Chinese tour operators’ Newmarket experience

21 March 2014

Staff at the Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa pulled out all the stops recently to welcome ten UK-based Chinese tour operators who visited Newmarket to check out its unique tourism qualities.

Staff at the Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa pulled out all the stops recently to welcome ten UK-based Chinese tour operators who visited Newmarket to check out its unique tourism qualities.

The overnight stay at Newmarket’s only four-star hotel was part of a three-day tour seeing the best tourism spots in the East of England in a joint promotion organised by Essex County Council, Visit Essex, Suffolk County Council, Visit Suffolk, The Newmarket Experience, Norfolk County Council and Visit Norfolk.

Noel Byrne, Chief Executive of Bedford Lodge Hotel said: “Newmarket is a truly unique town when it comes to horses. Nowhere in the world matches the facilities we offer in terms of vets, studs, breeding, sales, history and racing.”

The tourists’ whistle-stop tour included a visit to the gallops, two of the many horse yards, National Stud, Rowley Mile Racecourse, Tattersall’s, Animal Health Trust followed by dinner at The Jockey Club Rooms.

After an overnight stay at the hotel, guests tucked into a traditional Chinese breakfast in the award-winning Squires restaurant, including congee – rice porridge, green onion and egg – salted duck eggs, steamed dumplings and egg noodle soup.

Then they left for more sightseeing in Norfolk including Sandringham.

Between them the 10 Chinese tour operators organise the majority of inbound Chinese tourism to the UK, bringing over between 150 and 2,000 groups each per year, made up of luxurious leisure tourists, business tourists, official/training delegations, summer/winter camp students groups, and Chinese people living in UK.

Before the visit Essex County Councillor Sue Lissimore, Deputy to Councillor Kevin Bentley, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth & Infrastructure, said: “Chinese travellers are becoming a major segment growth opportunity for the UK tourism industry. We’ve long recognised the potential growth and increasing importance of the Chinese tourists’ market.”

Councillor Richard Smith MVO, Suffolk County Council's Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Environment and Planning, said: “We all know what a fantastic place Suffolk is to work, rest and play in - we now need to blow our trumpets harder and wider to extend our unique offer to those increasing numbers of Chinese tourists, both individual and groups, looking for ‘destinations’ that can offer a package of experiences within each County.”

Amanda Bond, brand manager at Visit Suffolk adds: “Visit Suffolk are excited about welcoming such an esteemed group of tour operators to the county in partnership with Norfolk and Essex. China offers huge potential to the visitor economy and by 2020 will be one of the main contributors to a 60% growth in global tourism.

“If we need further convincing, the average spend per Chinese visitor is £1688 compared to the average of just £567. So by working in partnership with Newmarket Experience, we have pulled together a truly inspiring visit in and around the home of horseracing, carefully matching the experiences with the Chinese visitor which we hope will feature in future operator itineraries.”

Bedford Lodge Chief Executive wins Businessman of the Year 2013

11 December 2013

Noel Byrne, Bedford Lodge Hotel’s Chief Executive, has been named Businessperson of the Year at the annual Newmarket & District Chamber of Commerce awards.

Noel Byrne, Bedford Lodge Hotel’s Chief Executive, has been named Businessperson of the Year at the annual Newmarket & District Chamber of Commerce awards.

Noel’s hotel experience spans 36 years, including 10 at Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa, Newmarket’s only AA-rated four-star hotel.

The accolade, awarded for the first time at the event, recognises the person who, in the judges’ opinion, has served above and beyond the call of duty.

Graham Abbey, Chairman of NDCC, commented: “We were very pleased to receive strong nominations for this award.  Our judges were delighted to present the award to Noel for his continuing and active support of many business and charitable organisations in Newmarket, including NDCC.  Those who nominated him had all benefited from his time, advice and support, all of which he offers freely and without agenda.”

Noel said: “It’s a great honour to be nominated let alone win. Newmarket is a historic town with a rich and distinguished heritage. I am pleased to support Newmarket and our local businesses.”

Bedford Lodge Hotel Takes Home Awards from Velvet Magazine

13 November 2013

Staff at Newmarket’s Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa are celebrating after winning a two local awards including ‘First for Hotels’ and ‘First for Diet and Fitness’ with a ‘Highly Commended’ accolade for Weddings.

Staff at Newmarket’s Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa are celebrating after winning a two local awards including ‘First for Hotels’ and ‘First for Diet and Fitness’ with a ‘Highly Commended’ accolade for Weddings.

This isn’t the first time they have won Velvet magazine’s “First for Hotels” category but winning the “First for Diet and Fitness” award for the first time was the icing on the cake.

It is particularly pleasing for Chief Executive Noel Byrne and his team since it was a public vote that secured their place. Thousands of readers of Velvet magazine visited their website www.velvetmag.co.uk to vote for their favourite venues and health and fitness facilities across Cambridge, Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket, Saffron Walden and Ely.

Paul Simmons, Leisure Club Manager at Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa, said: “We are really pleased. But we know we have a quality product not to mention good staff and facilities, which are state of the art.

“We make sure we look after all our members. We are constantly updating our leisure offerings and reviewing our dance studio timetable to ensure the best experience for members.”

Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa is the only four-star hotel in Newmarket. It has 77 stylish guest rooms, is set in three acres of secluded rose gardens and recently opened a new £5.5 million destination spa in July of this year.

Noel said: “This really is an accomplishment for the hotel and the staff after a year of expansion. This was a public vote so it is a tremendous accolade for our team and I just want to congratulate them on their achievement.”

Awards were presented at the annual Velvet awards ceremony, held this year on Newmarket’s High Street.

The Bedford Lodge Hotel was originally a Georgian Hunting Lodge built for the Duke of Bedford in the 18th century. Today the hotel offers the very best in modern comfort and luxury while retaining the charm and character of its country-house beginnings.

As well as its health and fitness club and impressive conference facilities, is also licensed for civil ceremonies, contains three self-contained banqueting suites and can accommodate celebrations from 10 to 150 guests.
