Gardening tips from our award-winning Geoff for National Gardening week

Service the mower, finish off the last of the pruning and start giving the lawn a bit of tender loving care – says Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa’s professional gardener – for this is National Gardening Week.

Top tips for a beautiful garden from Bedford Lodge Hotel's head gardener

Tips from award-winning Newmarket gardener for National Gardening week (14-20 April)

Service the mower, finish off the last of the pruning and start giving the lawn a bit of tender loving care – says Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa’s professional gardener – for this is National Gardening Week.

Geoff Baker, 68, is an award-winning gardener who has tended the three-acre gardens at Newmarket’s only four-star hotel for 13 years.

He says his favourite season is this time of year, spring, because everything is bursting into life.

“Most gardeners will tell you that because this is the start of the growing season – the beginning of the gardening year.”

He takes particular pride in the striped lawns that greet guests as they drive into the estate, which used to be a hunting lodge built for the Duke of Bedfordshire in the 18th century.

“The lawn is a great first impression and when I receive compliments from guests about it there is nothing like it. I like to think it encourages those people just visiting that this is a really lovely place to stay overnight, too.”

In celebration of the Royal Horticultural Society’s National Gardening week, he has revealed his top lawn tips to Newmarket gardeners for this time of year.

He said: "Having a beautiful lawn really complements any garden and if you pay it a little attention in spring it will reward you for many months to come."

Geoff's Top Gardening Tips

  1. Your lawn should be mowed whenever the grass is growing, so that is generally weekly but can be more in this season when the weather gets warmer.
  2. Keep the grass at the same height, between 1-1.5 inches, although raise the mowing height for lawns that get a lot of wear or are in shade.
  3. Feeding the lawn with fertilizer not only makes it greener but thicker, so make sure you spend some money here.
  4. Aerate the lawn with a garden fork, especially if you have clay soil, to increase drainage and encourage better growth.
  5. If you have a moss problem you’ll need to scarify it by lifting it out from the lawn using a rake, then seed any bare patches.

"Then sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labour," adds Geoff.

Chinese tour operators’ Newmarket experience

21 March 2014

Staff at the Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa pulled out all the stops recently to welcome ten UK-based Chinese tour operators who visited Newmarket to check out its unique tourism qualities.

Staff at the Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa pulled out all the stops recently to welcome ten UK-based Chinese tour operators who visited Newmarket to check out its unique tourism qualities.

The overnight stay at Newmarket’s only four-star hotel was part of a three-day tour seeing the best tourism spots in the East of England in a joint promotion organised by Essex County Council, Visit Essex, Suffolk County Council, Visit Suffolk, The Newmarket Experience, Norfolk County Council and Visit Norfolk.

Noel Byrne, Chief Executive of Bedford Lodge Hotel said: “Newmarket is a truly unique town when it comes to horses. Nowhere in the world matches the facilities we offer in terms of vets, studs, breeding, sales, history and racing.”

The tourists’ whistle-stop tour included a visit to the gallops, two of the many horse yards, National Stud, Rowley Mile Racecourse, Tattersall’s, Animal Health Trust followed by dinner at The Jockey Club Rooms.

After an overnight stay at the hotel, guests tucked into a traditional Chinese breakfast in the award-winning Squires restaurant, including congee – rice porridge, green onion and egg – salted duck eggs, steamed dumplings and egg noodle soup.

Then they left for more sightseeing in Norfolk including Sandringham.

Between them the 10 Chinese tour operators organise the majority of inbound Chinese tourism to the UK, bringing over between 150 and 2,000 groups each per year, made up of luxurious leisure tourists, business tourists, official/training delegations, summer/winter camp students groups, and Chinese people living in UK.

Before the visit Essex County Councillor Sue Lissimore, Deputy to Councillor Kevin Bentley, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth & Infrastructure, said: “Chinese travellers are becoming a major segment growth opportunity for the UK tourism industry. We’ve long recognised the potential growth and increasing importance of the Chinese tourists’ market.”

Councillor Richard Smith MVO, Suffolk County Council's Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Environment and Planning, said: “We all know what a fantastic place Suffolk is to work, rest and play in - we now need to blow our trumpets harder and wider to extend our unique offer to those increasing numbers of Chinese tourists, both individual and groups, looking for ‘destinations’ that can offer a package of experiences within each County.”

Amanda Bond, brand manager at Visit Suffolk adds: “Visit Suffolk are excited about welcoming such an esteemed group of tour operators to the county in partnership with Norfolk and Essex. China offers huge potential to the visitor economy and by 2020 will be one of the main contributors to a 60% growth in global tourism.

“If we need further convincing, the average spend per Chinese visitor is £1688 compared to the average of just £567. So by working in partnership with Newmarket Experience, we have pulled together a truly inspiring visit in and around the home of horseracing, carefully matching the experiences with the Chinese visitor which we hope will feature in future operator itineraries.”

Noel Byrne, Bedford Lodge Hotel’s Chief Executive, has been named Businessperson of the Year at the annual Newmarket & District Chamber of Commerce awards.

Noel Byrne, Bedford Lodge Hotel’s Chief Executive, has been named Businessperson of the Year at the annual Newmarket & District Chamber of Commerce awards.

Noel’s hotel experience spans 36 years, including 10 at Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa, Newmarket’s only AA-rated four-star hotel.

The accolade, awarded for the first time at the event, recognises the person who, in the judges’ opinion, has served above and beyond the call of duty.

Graham Abbey, Chairman of NDCC, commented: “We were very pleased to receive strong nominations for this award.  Our judges were delighted to present the award to Noel for his continuing and active support of many business and charitable organisations in Newmarket, including NDCC.  Those who nominated him had all benefited from his time, advice and support, all of which he offers freely and without agenda.”

Noel said: “It’s a great honour to be nominated let alone win. Newmarket is a historic town with a rich and distinguished heritage. I am pleased to support Newmarket and our local businesses.”

The opening stage (or Grand Départ) of the Tour De France 2014 will begin in England and pass through Cambridge and beautiful Suffolk on the stage from Cambridge to London, which brings it within touching distance of the Bedford Lodge Hotel and Spa when it passes through Great Shelford, Duxford and Sawston.

It was recently announced that the opening stage (or Grand Départ) of the Tour De France 2014 will begin in England and pass through Cambridge and beautiful Suffolk on the stage from Cambridge to London.

This means it will bring it within touching distance of the Bedford Lodge Hotel and Spa when it passes through Great Shelford, Duxford and Sawston.

The Bedford Lodge Hotel and Spa is preparing for this major event by upgrading our already large car park, which can hold up to 120 cars and has no height restriction.

The 101st edition of the Tour de France will begin in Leeds on July 5th.  We already know that the first phases of the race will centre around Yorkshire, including Harrogate and Sheffield, then heading south to Cambridge and London - this really will be an exciting opening to the world famous tour - as Great Britain's Chris Froome and Sir Bradley Wiggins both aim to kick-start their campaigns with good times in the challenging opening stage.

The race comes to Cambridge on Monday 7th July for a 170km ride to London

Bedford Lodge Hotel Takes Home Awards from Velvet Magazine

13 November 2013

Staff at Newmarket’s Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa are celebrating after winning a two local awards including ‘First for Hotels’ and ‘First for Diet and Fitness’ with a ‘Highly Commended’ accolade for Weddings.

Staff at Newmarket’s Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa are celebrating after winning a two local awards including ‘First for Hotels’ and ‘First for Diet and Fitness’ with a ‘Highly Commended’ accolade for Weddings.

This isn’t the first time they have won Velvet magazine’s “First for Hotels” category but winning the “First for Diet and Fitness” award for the first time was the icing on the cake.

It is particularly pleasing for Chief Executive Noel Byrne and his team since it was a public vote that secured their place. Thousands of readers of Velvet magazine visited their website www.velvetmag.co.uk to vote for their favourite venues and health and fitness facilities across Cambridge, Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket, Saffron Walden and Ely.

Paul Simmons, Leisure Club Manager at Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa, said: “We are really pleased. But we know we have a quality product not to mention good staff and facilities, which are state of the art.

“We make sure we look after all our members. We are constantly updating our leisure offerings and reviewing our dance studio timetable to ensure the best experience for members.”

Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa is the only four-star hotel in Newmarket. It has 77 stylish guest rooms, is set in three acres of secluded rose gardens and recently opened a new £5.5 million destination spa in July of this year.

Noel said: “This really is an accomplishment for the hotel and the staff after a year of expansion. This was a public vote so it is a tremendous accolade for our team and I just want to congratulate them on their achievement.”

Awards were presented at the annual Velvet awards ceremony, held this year on Newmarket’s High Street.

The Bedford Lodge Hotel was originally a Georgian Hunting Lodge built for the Duke of Bedford in the 18th century. Today the hotel offers the very best in modern comfort and luxury while retaining the charm and character of its country-house beginnings.

As well as its health and fitness club and impressive conference facilities, is also licensed for civil ceremonies, contains three self-contained banqueting suites and can accommodate celebrations from 10 to 150 guests.
